Start with a little incense and a suitable holder
You do not need a complicated setup. A stable holder, a non-combustible ash tray and a ventilated space are a good place to begin. Use the instructions on your own incense package.
01 · Prepare the space
Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, paper and direct draughts. Make sure the holder matches the incense shape and can support it securely. Position the tray to collect falling ash.
02 · Light, then extinguish the flame
For stick incense intended to be lit directly, light the tip and gently put out the flame so only an ember remains. If it keeps a visible flame, extinguish it. Follow the label for the incense you have; coils and chips need their own suitable supports or equipment.
03 · Give the scent some space
Begin with a short, supervised session rather than a large amount of incense. Keep the room ventilated. If the scent or smoke feels too strong, extinguish it and air the room.
04 · Finish completely
Before leaving the room, extinguish the incense fully with a method suited to the holder and incense. Check that no glow or smoke remains. Let the holder and ash become cold before cleaning.
